How to Set Up a Christmas Margarita Bar
A Christmas margarita bar sounds like a big production but in practice, all you need a clear spot for the drinks, a few ingredients you love and some festive finishing touches.
The trick is to keep the menu small. One margarita base, a choice of rims and a bowl of citrus garnishes gives guests plenty to play with, while keeping your Christmas prep manageable.
Here’s how to put it together.
Pick your spot
Choose a stable table or bench with room for glasses, ingredients and a little mixing space. Keep it in the shade and away from the busiest route to the food.
Set everything out in the order it will be used: glasses first, then rimming dishes, followed by the mixing area and garnishes. Put napkins and a small bin nearby so sticky spoons and used citrus don’t take over.
A tray makes the whole setup easier to move if the Christmas weather has other ideas.
Gather your ingredients
Start with the number of adult guests who actually want a margarita and how many serves you plan to prepare. Keep alcohol-free drinks and water available too.
For the bar itself, gather:
- Tequila
- Craft Margarita Mix
- Plenty of ice, with extra kept chilled
- Dehydrated limes
- One or two cocktail rimming salts
- Glasses, a measuring jigger, a jug and a long spoon
- Shallow dishes for the rims
- Garnish tongs, napkins and a scoop for the ice
For a 120 ml pour, use 30 ml tequila and 90 ml mix, following the current product-page ratio of one part tequila to three parts mix. Serve over ice in a 250 ml rocks glass. Check your bottle’s directions before mixing.
For five pours: combine 150 ml tequila with 450 ml mix. This gives you 600 ml of base.
For ten pours: combine 300 ml tequila with 900 ml mix. This gives you 1.2 L of base.
These quantities exclude ice and ice melt. Use a measuring jigger so each glass gets the same balance.
Give guests two rim options

A choice of rims makes the setup feel generous without adding another drink to the menu.
Set out a classic-style salt and something with a citrus twist, such as Blood Orange Citrus Salt. Keep each in a separate shallow dish with its own label.
Moisten the outside edge of the glass and press it gently into the salt. A half-rim looks lovely and lets guests choose how much salt they enjoy with each sip.
Keep clean glasses beside the rims, ready for guests to choose their finish.
Make the garnishes festive
A dehydrated lime wheel does plenty of the visual work. Add an orange option if you’d like warmer colour on the table, then keep the decorations around the station simple.
Try red napkins, a green table runner or a Christmas ornament beside the menu, keeping decorations clear of the ingredients and glasses.

Prep the base and leave the ice until serving

If you’re making a batch, measure the tequila and mix using the current bottle directions, combine them in a clean jug and refrigerate until needed. Keep it clearly labelled so guests can tell it apart from the mocktails.
Keep ice out of the jug during storage so the batch doesn’t become watered down before the first guest arrives. Stir before serving, then pour measured portions over fresh ice.
For a smaller gathering, mixing each drink as needed is just as practical. Keep the recipe beside the ingredients for easy measuring.
Give alcohol-free drinks their own space
Add a clearly labelled citrus or cranberry mocktail beside the margaritas, with its own serving spoon.
Use the same style of glass and offer a salt or sugar rim where the flavour suits. Choose alcohol-free mixers and check their labels. Give both options the same care with garnishes.
Keep the menu easy to follow
A simple menu helps guests choose:
“Christmas margaritas. Choose your rim, add a lime garnish and ask the host for a pour.”
Include the mocktail on your menu and keep a water jug within easy reach.
Before everyone arrives, mix a small test serve and check the balance. Once the drinks station is ready, you can get back to the more pressing Christmas question: who’s bringing dessert?
Shop margarita mix and gather your garnishes for a Christmas setup with plenty of summer personality.
